Assessment

Assessment

Late Talkers – Serena will observe your child through play to identify strengths and needs in order to plan treatment. Formal assessment may be needed at a later date.

Speech sounds – Serena will use a screener or formal assessment to analyse speech errors in order to make a targeted therapy plan. It is normal for children to make some errors when learning to talk. Serena will check which ones are following the  expected pattern and which ones need help.

Full Language assessment for school aged children -A comprehensive standardised test to compare how your child is performing against other children the same age to identify strengths and challenges which may impact access to the curriculum. Includes contact with and gathering key information from school (if consented by parents). A detailed report with recommendations for home and school is included.

Social communication –  Full language assessment with extension testing to look at the areas of language ‘behind words’; looking at how your child uses all the cues and inference (applying knowledge and piecing together) to arrive at the intended meaning. These are young people and children struggling with social relationships.

Mental Health –.  Serena listens without judgement and engages with the young person to figure out what may be underlying sad feelings, social difficulties and inability to attend school. These are children who may feel misunderstood; needs are not always immediately obvious and/or are feeling like they don’t belong.

Initial consultation

You will meet with Serena in the clinic to discuss needs. Serena will play and chat with your child and observe their communication. She will put a plan together based on observation along with important case history gathering.  Any notes from School or creche may be helpful to bring. Serena may also screen speech sounds and analyse language samples. Options may be further assessment, School/creche visit, home visit or a review appointment following advice.
